Human Medicine - The Cologne Model Study Course

At the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cologne, the study of human medicine has been taking place since the winter semester 2003/2004 as a model course of study. In the curriculum, extra focus was not only placed on the consistent encouragement of patient-oriented and interdisciplinary teaching, but also on the early confrontation with scientific questions. The standard course of study is no longer offered.

Education is based on systematic teaching in the classical field areas (e.g. internal medicine, surgery, neurology, pediatrics, etc.) complemented by:

  • Interdisciplinary teaching: Fields of competence are interdisciplinary courses in which important diseases and frequent symptoms are taught compactly and multidisciplinary from the first semester onwards.
  • Practice-oriented teaching: Medical skills are trained on the model, in realistic simulated situations and with actor patients in the SkillsLab and practiced in clinical block internship/rotation courses.
  • Patient-oriented teaching: In the StudiPat (study-accompanying patient care) we offer insight into the trust relationship between a family doctor and the patient from the first semester onwards.
  • Science-oriented teaching: Scientific projects in the pre-clinical and clinical stages as well as the optional Research Track enable you to participate in the excellent research of the University Hospital Cologne.
  • Elective: Each semester, you can select at least one elective of your preference. Here you can expand your knowledge in your individual interests.

Another brief introduction is provided in our flyer: Human Medicine & Dentistry. The Cologne model study course is designed in such a way that the requirements of the nationwide licensing regulations for doctors are adhered to and the course of study is completed with the state examination.
