Training program for doctors conducting research

Since 2017, the Faculty of Medicine has been funding an additional Clinician Scientist Program - Cologne Clinician Scientist Program (CCSP) - endowed with 1 million euros per year. The idea: to encourage physicians who are both clinically and scientifically active, as an essential link so that research and health care are tightly interlinked.

From 2019 on, the program will be supplemented and expanded by funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for Clinician Scientist Programs: This will enable the paracurricular support for students (research track, research fair, free semesters, research stipends) in the postgraduate field to be further augmented.

The Clinician Scientist program is aimed at physicians who have completed their first years of residency, but also at senior physicians who have a documented scientific interest. The Clinician Scientist program is intended to promote the recruitment of scientifically interested physicians and encourage long-term scientific work parallel to or alternating with further clinical training.

The program is initially funded for 3 years and can be extended for a further year following a positive evaluation. By supporting Clinician Scientists further through structured programs and the involvement of the Clinical Trials Centre Cologne and the clinics, the Faculty of Medicine aims to strategically advance the expansion and networking of research and translation.
