Historie
Die Medizinische Gesellschaft Köln wurde durch Herrn Professor Scheid im Jahr 1960 gegründet. Ihr Ziel ist es, Schwerpunkte der aktuellen medizinischen Forschung darzustellen und grundsätzliche Fragen der Medizin - auch fachübergreifend - anzusprechen und zu diskutieren.
Neben den Antrittsvorlesungen neu berufener Ordinarien sowie Einführungsvorlesungen neu ernannter Privatdozent*innen berichten hier erfahrene Fakultätsmitglieder in regelmäßigen Vorlesungen über die Fortschritte und zukünftigen Entwicklungen ihres Faches. Zudem ist mit der Veranstaltungsreihe “Leben und Sterben historischer Persönlichkeiten” eine weit über die Fakultät bekannte Vorlesungsreihe etabliert worden. Die Medizinische Gesellschaft soll den Ärzt*innen der Stadt Köln und allen Interessierten zur Verbesserung der gegenseitigen wissenschaftlichen und persönlichen Kommunikation dienen.
Es werden keine Mitgliedsbeiträge erhoben.
Der Eintritt ist frei.

The longevity concept - myth and reality
Increasing life expectancy is one of the greatest successes of modern medicine. But with it comes the question: how do we gain not just years, but healthy life expectancy?
Between scientific progress, new therapeutic approaches and a multitude of public discussions about "anti-ageing" and prevention, it is not always easy to distinguish between well-founded findings and exaggerated expectations.
This lecture provides an evidence-based overview of the current state of ageing research:
What do we know for sure?
Which approaches are promising?
And where are the limits of what is currently feasible?
A classification between medical reality and justified hope.

Vortrag des Nobelpreisträgers Prof. Dr. Martin Chalfie:
"The continuing need for useless knowledge"
Mit Professor Martin Chalfie begrüßen wir einen der prägendsten Biologen unserer Zeit in Köln. Professor Chalfie erhielt den Nobelpreis für Chemie 2008 für die Einführung des Grün Fluoreszierenden Proteins (GFP) als biologischen Marker, eine Methode, die die moderne Biomedizin grundlegend verändert hat. Er hat mit seiner Forschung, aber auch seiner ungewöhnlichen Neugier und Intuition eine Epoche der Biowissenschaften geprägt. In seinem Vortrag „The continuing need for useless knowledge" greift er Abraham Flexners berühmtes Plädoyer von 1939 auf und zeigt, weshalb gerade scheinbar zweckfreie Grundlagenforschung die eigentliche Quelle wissenschaftlicher Revolutionen bleibt.
Der Vortrag erfolgt in englischer Sprache.
