Research Campus: Synergies for the scientific progress
The Faculty of Medicine has purposefully established cooperations and scientific networks in order to utilize synergies. Institutionalized cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and systematic integration of the non-university research institutions located in the Cologne region have characterized the faculty.
This strategic orientation has led to the establishment of several research institutions with multiple partners. These include the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC) and the Cologne Center for Genomics (CCG), which will develop with the DFG funds into the West German Genome Center collectively with the regions of Bonn and Düsseldorf.
The interdisciplinary focus areas on aging and demographic development will be implemented in the Faculty of Medicine with emphasis on molecular and systemic physiological mechanisms of age-associated diseases. The aim is to strengthen translational research and to further develop general health expertise.
The faculty holds close relations with the Jülich Research Center, the German Aerospace Center, the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and the German Center for Infection Research. The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital of Cologne continue to be partners/candidates in the German Center for Diabetes Research and the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research.
Interuniversity cooperations exist through collaborative research projects, infrastructure projects and cooperative doctorates.
Last but not least, international cooperations affirm the cooperative strength of the Faculty of Medicine of Cologne.
