A service of the Faculty of Medicine
Central Scientific Workshop
Scientific workshop
The central scientific workshop of the University Medical Center Cologne combines the departments of precision mechanics, mechatronics, electronics and system development to form an interdisciplinary facility for the production and development of laboratory prototypes and custom-made products. In addition to the development, the repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment, custom-made products and prototypes is also offered.
Thanks to our broad-based technical expertise, it is possible to offer complete technical concepts that are tailored to the client's requirements.
Our task - centrally for all institutes of the Faculty of Medicine - is to create complex workpieces, electronics and software solutions for experimental set-ups and examination papers and to provide technical advice to faculty members.

Mechanische Werkstatt
Metal components stand for high quality, precision, and durability. In our workshop, we manufacture components from common and high-quality metals with a precision of 10μm.
The workshop is equipped with drilling machines, conventional lathes and milling machines, CNC lathes and milling machines, and sheet metal working machines.
We look forward to receiving your inquiry and will be happy to help you plan and design your project according to your requirements.
Plastic Processing
Components made of plastic not only impress with their cost-effective procurement and processing, but above all they convince with their unique material properties, especially in laboratory technology and cell biology applications. We specialize in processing various types of plastics to meet a wide range of requirements.Plastics find a variety of applications in our field of work. From the production of signs and containers to cell-engineering support components, we can manufacture these with professional equipment. For more information, take a look at our completed projects. In addition to classic mechanical processing, we expand our capabilities with the support of state-of-the-art 3D printing technologies. Be sure to check out 3D printing.
Mechatronics Department
Our mechatronics department brings rigid components to life. Whether pneumatic or electric motor-driven, we will find a way to automate your systems or optimize your work processes.
Control and regulation are implemented using precision mechanics and computational controlling. Learning and understanding application-related technology is the premise of our working group.
We offer motivated and ambitious young people the opportunity to learn in close proximity to research and medicine. You can find more information under Training.
Elektronics Workshop
This allows us to offer motivated and ambitious young people the opportunity to learn in close proximity to research and medicine. For more information, please see Training.
Our electronics department specializes in analog and digital technology as well as firmware development.
Software Development
While modern measurement systems are becoming increasingly complex, their operation and application do not necessarily have to lose user-friendliness.
Together, we are happy to respond to your wishes and requirements in order to find the most customized software solution possible. From automation and data management to data analysis, we strive to create the most targeted application for you.
Thanks to microcontrollers, support systems, and graphical user interfaces, your applications can be easily controlled and data displayed as quickly as possible.
Devices-Development
The bridges of communication between natural sciences, medicine, and technology are often difficult to navigate.
The device development department of the central scientific workshop specializes explicitly in interdisciplinary communication and system/method development. Our task is to conceptualize, plan, and implement your ideas in close cooperation with you, in accordance with your requirements and expectations.
We are happy to advise you on your project planning and problems and work with you to find the best possible solution.
3D Printing Core Facility
In addition to the mechanical processing of plastics and metals, it is also possible to manufacture a wide variety of plastics and additive processes using 3D printing.
In our 3D Core Facility, components, spare parts, and prototypes can be produced using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology. Depending on the area of application, dimensions, and precision requirements, different printers are available.
Our specially trained staff is available to provide advice and assistance in design, construction, and manufacturing.
