Publication recording and bonification
Publication bonification and EVALuna bibliometric database
At the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cologne, publications are currently rewarded with a total of €2 million annually. The impact factor is used as a parameter, which is distributed to the authors according to their position in the list of authors. Further information on the criteria and the calculation method can be downloaded here as a PDF.
In order for the Faculty of Medicine's publications to be taken into account for the internal publication bonification as well as for reports/evaluations, all scientific papers from the clinics and institutes must be entered into the EVALuna publication database every year.

The following three criteria must be met for a publication to be included in the internal publication bonification:
- The work must be included in the "Web of Science Core Collection" database.
- The work must have an address/affiliation that is unambiguously associated with the Faculty of Medicine/University Hospital of Cologne. Please note the publication guidelines of the University of Cologne.
The work must correspond to a specific publication type (article, editorial, review, letter, news item).
Impact factor (IF)
What is the impact factor?
The “official” impact factor used exclusively at the faculty is the “journal impact factor” from the Web of Science's Journal Citation Reports. The impact factor is a criterion that shows how often certain articles in a journal are cited. Therefore, the IF is essentially a quantitative assessment, but it is used to evaluate the significance of journals. The higher the IF of a journal, the more influential it is. Conversely, however, the publication of articles by certain authors in these journals serves as an indicator of the quality of research performance. The IF also serves as an important reference point at the Faculty of Medicine for the annual publication award and the allocation of third-party funding and scholarships.
How is the impact factor calculated?
The data used to calculate the impact factor comes from the two previous years. For how the calculation formula works please refer to Impact-Faktor - DocCheck Flexikon.
Which journals receive an impact factor?
One prerequisite is that only journals listed in the Web of Science database under the corresponding Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index are assigned an IF.
When will the new impact factor be assigned, and when will it be available on EVALuna?
Impact factors are usually announced at the end of June/beginning of July and are available in EVALuna for the previous year from August onwards.
