Choice of subjects

The University of Cologne divides the year of clinical training into three sections (PJ-Tertiale). Students from universities in other countries are not bound by these divisions.
If you decide to do your final year of clinical training (PJ) or a short-term clinical traineeship (Famulatur) here in Cologne you are free to choose when and in which departments this happens.

You must spend at least 2 weeks in one department! Students who are not enrolled at our Faculty of Medicine must spend at least 4 weeks in one department.

However, please note that the following departments require evidence of knowledge of the German language at level B2.1 (CEFR):

  • obstetrics and gynaecology
  • paediatrics
  • ophtalmology
  • forensic medicine
  • neurology
  • radiology/diagnostic imaging
  • psychiatry (min. C1.1 necessary)

These departments cannot accept students who do not provide the necessary evidence of their language skills before the start of the traineeship.
