With Professor Martin Chalfie, we welcome one of the most influential biologists of our time to Cologne. Professor Chalfie was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for introducing green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a biological marker, a method that has fundamentally transformed modern biomedicine. Through his research, as well as his extraordinary curiosity and intuition, he has shaped an era in the life sciences. In his lecture “The continuing need for useless knowledge,” he takes up Abraham Flexner’s famous 1939 plea and demonstrates why seemingly purposeless basic research remains the true source of scientific revolutions.
