From fundamental research to translational research
The Faculty of Medicine conducts basic research - in particular in cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences - as well as other non-university cooperation partners and institutions.
The aim of basic research is to decipher relationships between structures and processes as completely as possible and to uncover the underlying mechanisms. Here, questions are systematically examined which are not directly related to application or directly aimed at therapeutic application, but which form the basis for further investigations and should lead to the solution of practical problems. Basic research thus creates the basis for all subsequent application-oriented developments and technical innovations. Further, targeted basic research at the frontier of applied research is dealt with by translational research, i.e. the rapid and efficient transfer of preclinical research into clinical development and application.
