Compensation for disadvantages during studies and examinations
Students on degree courses in Human Medicine, Dentistry, Clinical Nursing (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), Neuroscience (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and Midwifery Science (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) are entitled to compensation for disadvantages under certain conditions. The aim is to compensate for impairments in the course of examinations and studies through no fault of their own without changing the required level of performance.
Legal basis: Higher Education Act of the State of NRW (HG) (§ 3 Para. 5 S. 2 HG and § 64 Para. 2 No. 5 HG)
Examples
Health restrictions and health issues
If students are unable to sit examinations or complete coursework in the prescribed form or to the prescribed extent due to a long-term or permanent illness or a disability, individual adjustments may be granted.
Examples of adjustments:
Extended examination or writing time
Use of technical aids
Separate examination room
Adjustments to deadlines and attendance requirements
Extensions to deadlines for coursework
Pregnancy and parenthood
Under maternity protection regulations and the provisions of the Federal Parental Allowance and Parental Leave Act, there is also the possibility of compensation for any disadvantage suffered.

The option to sit exams despite being on leave
Consideration regarding deadlines, time limits and attendance requirements
Caring for relatives
Caring for or looking after close relatives (e.g. a spouse, registered partner, first-degree relatives or relatives by marriage) is also taken into account.

General information on application and deadlines
- The application must be submitted immediately after the requirements have been met. Usually before the start of the lecture period
- Applications must be submitted electronically to the Examinations Office.
- This also applies to deadlines, courses and coursework.
- A detailed justification and suitable evidence are required.
- In the case of permanent restrictions, compensation for disadvantages can be granted for the entire course of study.
Advice on the application process
The Examinations Office advises applicants in detail on the possibilities of compensation for disadvantages and provides the relevant form.
All documents and evidence must be submitted in full and exclusively electronically via the Examinations Office. The Examinations Office forwards the submitted documents to the relevant examination board.
