Research Area D: Membrane Senescence and Lipid-associated Signals
Project leader: Prof. Dr. Martin Krönke
Key objectives of RA D are to investigate:
- functional roles of ceramide species in aging-associated disorders, CerS-specific regulation of proteases in pathogen defense and neurodegenerative disorders, and the molecular basis of C16-ceramide-specific control of mitochondrial function in metabolic homeostasis
- age-related changes in plasma membrane structure and inflammatory state caused by altered desaturation and elongation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)
- effects of age-related changes in lipid microdomains on mitochondrial membrane permeability and function, as well as in ion channels function at the glomerular filtration barrier
