Together with the University Hospital Cologne, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne forms a very dynamic scientific location. The close cooperation between the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Cologne ensures a patient-oriented research focus. It is characterized by the integration of medically oriented basic research, clinical research and patient care.

The Faculty of Medicine bundles its activities in research focus areas that deal with issues of high scientific and social relevance. They have a high profile and are characterized by research at the highest international level. The research priorities were developed in a strategic process with national and international review.

The research focuses are embedded in the University of Cologne's Key Profile Areas “Aging-Associated Diseases” and “Cancer Biology and Medicine”.

The Cross-sectional Research Area bridges the interface between cutting-edge university research on the one hand and social responsibility on the other. The Cross-sectional Research area investigates the interaction of individual influencing factors and social contexts on health and healthcare.
