The Faculty of Medicine's Scientific Career Day is taking place for the fifth time and will become the Scientific Career Days this year!
How do I submit my first grant proposal? How do I apply for a professorship? How can I communicate my scientific work? What are my strengths and what do they have to do with my background? What about innovation and entrepreneurship in medicine? What is the impostor phenomenon all about?
Under the motto "Academic future paths and empowerment in medicine", these questions will be explored over five days in person and online.
Our now legendary Science Slam will also take place on November 18 from 6:30 pm. Further information can be found here.
The program is aimed in particular at PhD students and PostDocs. Other interested parties can also register.

My first DFG grant proposal (in English)

Target group: PostDocs who plan to submit their first DFG grant proposal within the individual research grants program. Everyone who is unsure, whether or not this is the most appropriate program for him/her is welcome to contact Dr. Simona Walker prior to registration.
Workshop concept:
The first part of the workshop will take place on November 12, 10 am – 11.30 am. You will receive an introduction into the proposal structure, requirements and input on specific sections/modules of your proposal including budget calculations, gender equality, research data management and sustainability. It is recommended to have a first draft of the objectives and work program ready before the workshop. You will be assigned in peer feedback groups (2-3 participants) that will meet two to three month after the workshop for a peer feedback session. The trainer will make sure that the group members will submit their proposal in a different DFG Review Board. During the peer feedback session, you will receive individual feedback to your grant proposal from two peers and the trainer. The sessions will be scheduled individually after all peer group members have submitted their grant proposal to the trainer and have read the proposals of two peers. The goal of this workshop is to submit your grant proposal to the DFG after the second part of the workshop.

This seminar addresses young scientists who are considering a career as a professor at a medical faculty or are already in the middle of an application process for a professorship in Germany. It will give the participants an overview of the career paths to a professorship, covering the legal requirements, the appointment procedure and the legal status of a professor. The seminar also addresses how to approach the search for relevant job advertisements, how to prepare the written application documents and how to make a good impression during the further steps in the selection process. In the second part of the seminar, the participants will receive an overview of the next steps for the successful candidates. This includes the appointment negotiations with medical faculties, the legal framework and the strategic preparation for those negotiations.

Science communication - or the successful communication of scientific content - has become increasingly important since the coronavirus pandemic. Various actors (journalists, researchers, communicators and others) and channels (print, digital, on-site) shape the way in which scientific findings and working methods are perceived in the public eye. In the workshop, the actors and paths will be presented in theory together with practical examples and possibilities will be developed for the participants themselves to communicate their scientific work.

Impostor phenomenon describes the feeling of constant self-doubt about one's own competence and achievements. It includes the feeling of being an impostor and running the risk of being exposed at any moment. This is why it is also known as impostor syndrome. This concept is mainly described for high-achieving people. It often affects people who do not attribute or recognize success to their own achievements and abilities. The aim of this course is to get to know the impostor phenomenon. To this end, the characteristics and various scientific explanations that promote its development will be examined. Practical exercises will look at professional development and hidden beliefs will be identified. The focus will be on the question of why the impostor phenomenon is affecting more and more scientists and what links there are to mental health. Finally, strategies to work effectively against negative thoughts will be considered.

Being the first in the family to go to university, do a doctorate and take the next steps - a path with many facets, special challenges and questions. Your own parents are often unable to provide much support because they know little or nothing about the academic world: what are my strengths and what do they have to do with my background? What habitus do I bring with me and what is desired at the university? And: which unwritten rules do I encounter again and again? We will work together on biographical patterns, become aware of our own strengths and discuss privileges. The workshop works out the resources that first-time female academics bring with them and can use for their path in academia. It offers the opportunity to reflect on the effects of one's own educational background and to exchange ideas with other early career researchers.
